Chapter Ten
Shane strolled down the aisle, the shelves lining both sides filled with books. He had thirty minutes to kill, and what better way to pass the time than in a bookstore. Harveyâs New and Used Books was right next to BethAnnâs, but until this afternoon, he hadnât ventured inside.
He checked the time on his cell phone, then slid it back into his pocket. Soon, heâd head next door to walk Jess home. If she would let him.
After sheâd stormed out last night, he hadnât gone after her. Sheâd needed time to cool down. Actually, he had too. He was still having a hard time wrapping his mind around what sheâd done. Although he hadnât moved past wanting to give her a good hard shake, he had to admire her ingenuity.
Heâd called Ross last night to let him know what had happened. Ross had wanted to know whether he felt the case had been compromised, and heâd said no. Although Jess was angry with him, they both wanted the same thingâPriscilla Parkerâs killers brought to justice. Jess wouldnât do anything to jeopardize that, regardless of how she felt about him.
He turned the corner and headed up the next aisle. Although his gaze slid over the titles displayed there, he didnât really see them. When heâd walked into his apartment last night, heâd anticipated an enjoyable evening eating pizza and chatting with Jess. The last thing heâd expected was for her to have hacked into his computer during the twenty-five minutes heâd been gone.
He drew to a stop and looked at the sign mounted over the top shelf. He was in the self-help section.
Yeah, he needed help. He needed his head examined. He should never have left Jess alone in his apartment. He should have insisted she go with him to pick up the pizza. They could have made the salads together when they got home. At the least, he shouldnât have saved her background check to his hard drive. Or he should have deleted it once heâd read it.
He released a sigh. Playing woulda-coulda-shoulda wasnât getting him anywhere. He walked to the action-adventure section and pulled a book from the shelf. He had several unread eBooks waiting on his tablet, but after spending the last half hour in the store killing time, the least he could do was make a purchase.
The young man at the counter gave him a friendly smile. Kevin, according to the name plate pinned to his pocket. âDid you find what you were looking for?â
âI did. Thank you.â At least, he found what promised to be an entertaining read. Other things he was looking for werenât available in a bookstore. Like what to do about Jess.
Kevin slid the purchase into a bag. âThis is a good book, one of his best.â
âSo I made a wise choice. Thanks.â
When he walked into the fabric and craft store, the clock behind the counter said a minute till six. BethAnn eyed the bag dangling from his hand. âI see you visited Harveyâs.
